DOVR Field Notes
Market Wrap-Up
Field Notes · DOVR Retailer Intelligence — 7-Day Lookback · April 27, 2026
The 60-Second Version
- IEEPA refund portal is live. Up to $127B eligible. File now — refunds in 60–90 days.
- Section 232 now hits full product value — not just metal content. Duties up to 50%.
- Consumer sentiment at historic low (47.6). But core retail sales up 6 straight months. Furniture is the one category declining.
- AI-referred traffic converts 42% better than non-AI. 93% of AI Mode searches = zero clicks.
- High Point confirmed direction: walnut, cream, skirted silhouettes, "Collage" aesthetic.
Writing this from my last day at Market. The floor confirmed exactly what the data's been saying — tariff resilience, AI readiness, and design relevance aren't three strategies. They're one. More when I'm back.
Tariffs & Trade
- Section 301 hearings begin April 28 (forced labor, 60 economies) and May 5 (excess capacity, 16 economies). Goal: permanent tariff authority before Section 122 expires July 24.
- IEEPA refund portal (CAPE) live since April 20. $127B eligible. Phase 1 covers unliquidated entries + entries within 80 days of liquidation. File via ACE Portal.
- Section 232: tariffs now apply to full customs value of finished products with steel/aluminum/copper. Duties up to 50%. Metal bed frames, table bases, shelving, hardware — all hit.
- Section 122 holds at 10%. The 15% increase was never implemented.
Action: File IEEPA refunds now. Review every metal-component SKU. Model pricing for multiple tariff scenarios post-July.
Consumer & Retail
- Sentiment: 47.6 (historic low, 70-year index). But core retail sales +0.41% MoM, +7.05% YoY. Six straight months up.
- The gap: high-income spending +2.9% YoY. Low-income: +1.1%. Widest divergence on record.
- Furniture is declining MoM and YoY — the only major category doing so while also being the #1 desired expensive purchase. Consumers want it. They're not buying it.
- Iran ceasefire extended but fragile. Hormuz still restricted. Oil $94–$105. Gas $4.05. Sub-$3 gas not expected until 2027.
- 17 furniture retailers closed or filed Q1. Industry sales down 8% since 2022. Housing market frozen.
Action: Segment your marketing (premium vs. entry-point). Make the purchase feel safe — reviews, guarantees, transparent pricing. Track your own sales against the macro.
AI & Search
- Google's AEO framework (April 11): five pillars for making sites consumable by AI agents — discoverability, parsability, token efficiency, capability signaling, access control.
- Chrome 146 shipped WebMCP. AI agents can now interact with your site tools directly. Being the tool an agent recommends = ranking #1.
- AI-referred traffic converts 42% better (Adobe, April 16).
- AI Overviews on 48% of queries (+58% YoY). Shopping queries: 14% (up 5.6x since Nov 2025).
- 93% of AI Mode searches end without a click. Zero-click is the baseline now.
- LLM bots crawl 3.6x more than Googlebot. Your site has three audiences: humans, crawlers, AI agents.
Action: Implement AEO. Add WebMCP tools to key pages. Create content designed for AI citation — buying guides, comparisons, material explainers.
Agentic Commerce
- UCP went multi-platform this week. Microsoft Copilot + Merchant Center joined Google, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, BigCommerce, PayPal, Stripe.
- 4,014 verified stores live. WooCommerce entered (3 stores, up from zero in March).
- World (Sam Altman) shipped AgentKit — proof-of-human credentials for AI shopping agents. Partners: Okta, Vercel, Browserbase.
- McKinsey: agentic commerce at $3–5T by 2030.
- Product data quality is the gating factor. Incomplete titles, missing dimensions, vague descriptions = invisible to AI.
Action: Audit your entire catalog. One cleanup serves every AI platform. This is the single highest-leverage action right now.
Design — High Point Market Wrap
- Theme: "Collage" — mixing patterns, eras, styles. Collected-over-time aesthetic.
- Wood: deep brown walnut dominant. Blonde is done.
- Neutral: cream replaced grey. Green functions as a neutral.
- Accents: Oak Ocher, Maple Spice, deep Merlot.
- Silhouettes: skirted is back — dining chairs, sofas, accent pieces. Curves everywhere.
- Seating: swivel is the new standard. Cushier, bigger, bolder.
- Storage: expected, not optional. Dual-purpose is baseline.
- Wellness: circadian lighting, ergonomic seating, comfort-first engineering.
- Motifs: birds, oversized florals, heritage textiles.
- Takeaway: retailers buying cautiously but specifically. Warm, personal, functional.
Social Commerce
- TikTok Shop: $23B+ projected this year. Half of US social shoppers buying there. Fee: 3.5% GMV + 1% during campaigns.
- Social commerce overall: $100B+ this year.
- Furniture hasn't arrived on social yet. Entry point: decor, lighting, accents, textiles.
- Winning format: short-form video in real rooms. Original content beats brand reshares.
- Reddit: authentic participation compounds in Google and AI results for weeks.
- New signal: social commerce + agentic commerce converging. Building audiences now = structural advantage.
Three Signals

🔶 This week — UCP multi-platform. Microsoft joined. 4,014 stores. Infrastructure, not experiment. Audit your product data.
🔶 Confirmed — High Point locked in: walnut, cream, skirted, collage. Source to this now.
