This Saturday Is Bigger Than Labor Day Was. Your Value Customer Just Got Richer.

Trying something new — if info below doesn't help you sell something, it didn't make the cut.

The Three Things

1. This coming weekend is the one to fight for. Two operators told the trade press last month that the weekend after the holiday is routinely their biggest and that they extend as a matter of course. Sept 12–13 is four days out and most stores have already taken the signs down.

2. Your opening price point is being shopped by a customer who used to buy your middle. The Fed's Beige Book quotes a Chicago-area furniture retailer: "larger numbers of higher-income consumers are shopping at discount furniture stores." San Francisco reported the same shift.

3. Diesel set an all-time record — $5.9015 (AAA, Sept 7), up 30 cents in a week, past the June 2022 high. Your delivery math changed and you have a true sentence to say about it.

This Weekend: Sept 12–13

Labor Day results won't publish for two more weeks. What's already known is what everyone ran, and the spread is the whole strategy question: Ashley up to 70% off with 72-month financing. Jordan's 50% plus 0% for 48 months. Raymour 40%. Bassett and Stickley 35%. La-Z-Boy 30% with free delivery. A single-store independent in Montclair ran 20% off on American Leather, Cisco and Rowe — brands the nationals don't carry — and opens a showroom twice the size on Sept 24.

You can't win the 70%-off game. You don't have to play it.

→ RUN THE WEEKEND. Mark Mueller of Mueller Furniture: "oftentimes we will extend the sale an extra weekend — the weekend after the holiday can be a huge weekend." Oscar Miskelly: "It'll make or break your month. Oftentimes, it'll make or break your quarter." Your creative exists. Your media is written. Extending costs a buy and a sign change, and it catches everyone who spent the holiday deciding.

→ THEN PULL CLOSE RATE BY SALESPERSON. Miskelly on the current customer: "customers are more selective right now. Some closing numbers are down. Traffic, in some cases, is up." If that was your holiday weekend, the problem is on the floor, not in the ad, and another markdown won't fix it. Twenty-minute report. It usually names the problem out loud.

Who's Walking In

They want it and they're waiting for permission. Sentiment finalized August at 51.7 — historic lows — while the Conference Board still has furniture as the most-desired planned durable purchase of the next six months. Not a contradiction. That's someone who wants the sofa and needs a reason to feel fine buying it, and the reason is almost never price. It's delivery certainty, a return policy they understand, a warranty they can repeat back, and a payment they can picture. Have a salesperson walk you through their last three closes and tell you exactly what they said about delivery dates and warranty. Vague on either is a leaking ticket, and free to fix.

Half your traffic did the financing math in the car. Survey data circulated through HFA in late August — authored by a finance provider, so weigh it accordingly — puts it at 62% of consumers saying flexible payment helps them buy something they'd otherwise delay, and 50% having applied or planning to apply before they shop. The line worth stealing: "The most expensive sale you'll lose this year may not be the one from the customer who walked out. It may be the customer who stayed but had to settle for less." Present payment before price on anything above your average ticket.

Your cheapest corner deserves your best closer. Back to the Beige Book: entry price point, higher-income shopper. Most independents park that assortment in the back with no signage and nobody good standing near it. Merchandise it like a destination for thirty days. Nobody trades up from an unstaffed corner.

An Honest Urgency Story, Good for Eight Days

The Fed meets Sept 16 and it's a coin flip — markets sat near 52% hike / 47% hold Tuesday morning after August payrolls came in at +162,000 against a ~53,000 consensus. The 30-year fixed already ticked to 6.71%.

That's a rare urgency line you can use without stretching: rates may move in eight days, and locking financing today is a real hedge.

CALL YOUR FINANCE PARTNER THIS WEEK and ask one question: what does 25bp do to my buy-down cost on promotional financing? Skip it and you find out Sept 17 that the 60-month zero-interest offer already in your ad got more expensive to fund. Then brief the floor so they can use the rate story honestly for eight days.

Two Free Things

Your POS can now see a walk-in's abandoned online cart. Shopify shipped it Sept 3 — permitted staff see items from a recognized customer's abandoned checkout inside POS. For a furniture floor it's the best closing tool released this year: someone browses a sectional at 11 p.m., walks in Saturday, your salesperson isn't starting cold. Turn it on and train two people before the weekend. It only fires on an identified customer, which makes the email-at-greeting ask worth real money instead of a formality.

You can finally measure whether AI sends you shoppers. Google's Search Console generative-AI report went live to every account Aug 31 — impressions, pages, devices; no click data, that's the limit. Merchant Center AI insights are live in the US with a Share of Voice number against competitors. Open both, write the numbers down, keep the note. Ten minutes, and it's what proves the catalog work later.

Don't panic about one thing: Shopping impressions are down category-wide while CTR is up ~17% year over year (Optmyzr, Sept 7) — fewer, better clicks. Check CTR before touching bids. And annotate Sept 1: GA4 showed zero traffic that day across many accounts. Reporting bug, not a lost day.

Protect What You've Already Sold

Southern Motion filed Chapter 11 Aug 31 — 645 employees, no layoffs announced, parent Man Wah loaned $26M to clear the secured debt. If you carry it, ask your rep three things this week: which SKUs stay in production, real lead time on open orders, and whether customer deposits are protected.

Palliser stopped manufacturing — all Saltillo, Mexico production ceased in late July, and the acquirer bought the brand name, not the factories. Get country of manufacture, lead time and price-list status in writing before you sell another off the tag.

On diesel, say the true thing: "Diesel just set an all-time high — higher than 2022 — and our delivery fee moved with it." Then re-run your free-delivery threshold. A $1,499 floor set when diesel was $3.70 is a floor from a different economy.

The Back Page

Sept 11 — August CPI. Premarket final exhibitor list posts; build your walk plan that morning.

Sept 12 — MSC Panama surcharge, $297/40ft, charged on gate-in date.

Sept 13–16 — Premarket. (Furniture Today says 13–16 with a modified Rosh Hashanah schedule; the Market Authority page says 14–16. Confirm before booking.)

Sept 16 — FOMC, plus August retail sales that morning.

Sept 18 — CBP starts voiding importer-of-record numbers for bad Form 5106 data, no warning. Direct importers: log into ACE. Your physical address can't be your broker, forwarder or a P.O. box, and the email has to be yours. Twenty minutes; a voided number stops every container on the water.

Sept 21–23 — Midwest Furniture Show, Northlake, IL. Real substitute if High Point doesn't pencil.

Sept 24 / 28 / Oct 4 — UPS, FedEx, then USPS peak parcel surcharges. Price October accessory shipping now; every carrier is aligned, so there's nowhere to divert.

Oct 17–21 — High Point Fall Market.

Jan 1, 2027 — Section 232 settled: upholstered wooden furniture 25%→30%, cabinets and vanities 25%→50%. We flagged this date as unresolved last issue — Proclamation 11000 delayed it a full year, so today's rate is still 25%. Cabinetry sellers: this fall's buy is your last at 25%, set Q1 pricing in October.

Canada's counter-tariffs went live 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday morning — furniture 25–50%, lighting a flat 50%. Shipping north: in-transit goods are exempt with proof of shipment date, there's a remission process you claim at entry rather than chase as a refund, and call any Canadian customer with an open order before they meet a 50% duty at delivery.
