Gas Hits $4, and Google Punishes AI Filler

Field Notes Β· DOVR Retailer Intelligence 7-Day Lookback Β· April 6, 2026

The 60-Second Version

Gas just hit $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022. Diesel is up 45% since the Iran conflict started. That's going to show up in your shipping costs, your suppliers' costs, and eventually your customers' willingness to spend.

Google's core update finished rolling out. Mass-produced AI content got hit with a 71% traffic drop. Original, expert content gained 22%. If your product pages read like every other site's, Google noticed.

Shopify's agentic storefronts are now live β€” 5.6 million merchants visible to 880 million ChatGPT users. AI-attributed orders are up 11x. Your product data is either working for you right now or it isn't.

Spring High Point confirmed what the design communities have been saying: brown wood is back, cream is the new neutral, curves beat straight lines, and everything should look like you've been collecting it for years.

Tariffs & Trade

The Section 301 investigations are the big story. The USTR is investigating 16 economies for excess manufacturing capacity and 60 for forced labor. Public comment deadline: April 15. Hearings start May 5. This is the replacement plan for IEEPA tariffs.

Section 122 tariffs sit at 10%. The 15% increase still hasn't been formally implemented. Expires July 24.

Section 232 on furniture stays at 25% through 2026. The January 2027 decision point is getting closer.

U.S. furniture imports fell 12.7% last year to $29.6 billion. Exports also dropped 4.7%. The tariffs aren't boosting domestic production β€” they're just shrinking trade.

Lovesac is raising prices. La-Z-Boy already did. The retailers communicating openly about why are keeping customer trust. The ones doing it quietly are losing it.

Consumer Spending & Retail Health

Gas crossing $4 a gallon is the story that affects everything else. Diesel at $5.45 means higher shipping, higher delivery costs, and higher prices on the shelf. Analysts say this could add 0.1% to CPI for every 10% diesel increase. It won't show up overnight, but it's coming.

Consumer sentiment is at 53.3 β€” lowest of 2026. But actual retail spending rose 0.6% in February and is projected to grow 4.4% for the year. People are worried. They're still buying. Just more carefully.

53% of Americans set a formal budget this year. That's up from 46% β€” the biggest jump ever tracked. Budget-conscious doesn't mean not buying. It means they need a reason.

Progressive Furniture is shutting down after its Mexican supplier closed. Weir's going-out-of-business sale is underway in Dallas. Ashley's Texas plant closes May 7. The middle of the industry continues to get squeezed.

AI & Search

Google's March 2026 core update finished rolling out. The numbers are in.

Mass-produced AI content: down 71% in traffic. Original expert content: up 22%. Near-zero correlation between using AI and getting penalized β€” it's about whether a human added real value.

The new ranking signal is Information Gain. Google is asking: does this page add anything new that doesn't already exist in the top results? If the answer is no, you're losing rank.

AI Overviews now appear in 82% of B2B tech searches. When they appear, organic CTR drops 34.5%. But brands cited inside AI Overviews get 35% more clicks.

92% of brands are still invisible in ChatGPT and Perplexity. The window to own furniture buying content in AI search is still open. It won't be for long.

Agentic Commerce

Shopify's agentic storefronts are live and the scale is real. 5.6 million merchants. 880 million monthly ChatGPT users. AI-driven traffic up 7x. AI-attributed orders up 11x.

Products are discoverable across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Copilot. Purchases complete on your storefront β€” you control the experience.

The flat fee is 3.5% of GMV plus 1% during campaigns starting this month.

The question every retailer should be asking right now: if someone asks ChatGPT for a furniture recommendation in my category, do my products show up? If your data is incomplete or messy, the answer is no.

Design Signals

Spring High Point confirmed the trends that have been building in the design communities.

Brown walnut is the dominant wood tone. Cream is the trending neutral. Green functions as a neutral now. Cornflower blue showed up everywhere.

The big theme is "Collage" β€” mixing patterns, eras, and styles to create spaces that look collected over time. This is the opposite of matchy-matchy and the furthest thing from minimalism.

Curves continue to win. Swivel seating is everywhere β€” the static living room is officially over. Banquettes and skirted pieces are back in a big way, often with scalloped edges or fringe.

Storage is now an expectation, not a feature. Coffee tables have drawers. Side tables have shelves. Consumers want furniture that works harder.

Warm tones dominate: blush, coral, peach, terracotta, mustard. Cool greys are gone. Heritage florals β€” think William Morris β€” are back in textiles. Plaid showed up everywhere at market.

Resort-inspired, indoor-outdoor living is growing fast. Palm Springs vibes. Consumers want their homes to feel like a destination.

Community & Content

TikTok Shop is projected at $23.4 billion this year. The platform fee just dropped to 3.5% of GMV.

70% of Gen Z discovers products on TikTok. 42% say it's the most useful platform for product research. Half of all US social shoppers will buy on TikTok this year.

The TikTok design trends to know: skirted furniture is back, "broken floor plans" that create defined zones, and "cabbagecore" β€” yes, cabbage and lettuce motifs in decor. Weird? Yes. Viral? Also yes.

For furniture retailers, the entry point is still decor, lighting, accents, and textiles. The retailers building video audiences now will have a compounding advantage.

Reddit remains central. Authentic participation in r/HomeDecor, r/furniture, and r/interiordecorating surfaces in Google and AI search results for weeks.

54% of consumers say sustainability matters when buying furniture. Tell the story of where it comes from and how it's made.

Three Signals Worth Watching This Week

πŸ”Ά Building Fast β€” Act now Β· Gas Prices Hit $4 β€” Supply Chain Costs Rising Gas crossed $4 a gallon. Diesel is at $5.45, up 45% since February. This will show up in shipping, delivery, and eventually shelf prices. Retailers who get ahead of this with transparent communication and adjusted logistics will fare better than those who absorb silently until margins break.

πŸ”Ά Building Fast β€” Act now Β· Google Rewards Original Content, Punishes AI Filler The core update data is final: 71% traffic drop for mass-produced AI content, 22% gain for original expertise. Information Gain is the new signal. If your product pages don't add something unique β€” real photos, staff expertise, verified reviews β€” they're losing rank right now.

πŸ”Ά Steady Build β€” Ongoing Β· Agentic Commerce at Scale 5.6 million Shopify merchants are now visible to 880 million ChatGPT users. AI-attributed orders up 11x. Also live on Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot. Product data quality determines whether you get recommended. This is no longer early-adopter territory β€” it's the new baseline.
