Agentic Storefronts Go Default
Field Notes · DOVR Retailer Intelligence 7-Day Lookback · March 23, 2026
The 60-Second Version
The tariff picture got more complicated this week. Treasury Secretary Bessent announced Section 122 tariffs will rise to 15% — the implementation date isn't confirmed yet, but it's coming. Meanwhile IEEPA refund claims are moving forward: CBP has been ordered to reliquidate entries, and over 330,000 importers are potentially eligible. Section 232 tariffs on furniture (25%) remain unchanged. More furniture chains went under — Circle Furniture (70 years) filed Chapter 7, Kasala liquidated in February, and American Signature is in its final phase of closures.
The biggest story nobody's talking about: by the end of this month, every Shopify store will appear inside ChatGPT by default. AI-driven traffic to Shopify is up 7x since January 2025. Your product data is either ready for this or it isn't. And Google's March 2026 core update finished rolling out — over 55% of sites saw clear impact.
Design communities are moving fast on daybeds replacing sofas, irregular organic wood forms, and the continued death of minimalism.
Tariffs & Trade
The tariff situation got more layered this week. Treasury Secretary Bessent confirmed on March 4 that the Section 122 tariff will increase from 10% to 15% — but the effective date still hasn't been confirmed, reportedly because of complications with existing trade agreements. The tariff expires July 24, 2026 unless Congress extends it. For now, plan on 15% but know the timeline is uncertain.
Meanwhile, the IEEPA refund process is moving. The Court of International Trade ordered CBP to reliquidate entries without IEEPA duties. Over 330,000 importers made 53 million entries subject to these tariffs — approximately $166 billion collected. The retailers who've already contacted their customs brokers are ahead. The ones who haven't are running out of time to position themselves.
The dominant question across r/smallbusiness this week: "How do I plan pricing when the tariff rate could be 10%, 15%, or 0% depending on the week?" The consensus forming: build pricing models for all three scenarios. The retailers handling this best are the ones communicating openly with customers — explaining the why behind pricing rather than absorbing costs silently or passing them through without context.
Furniture prices are up 4.6% year over year. The Section 122 tariff expires July 24 unless extended. The 15% increase is announced but not yet implemented.
Consumer Spending & Retail Health
The furniture closures keep coming. Circle Furniture — 70 years in business — filed Chapter 7 in January and closed all locations. Kasala liquidated its three Seattle showrooms in February. American Signature / Value City Furniture is in its final phase of shutting down after November's Chapter 11. These aren't marginal businesses. They're multi-decade operators that couldn't adapt fast enough.
Consumer spending on furniture is forecast to grow 1.9% in 2026 — modest, but positive. The pattern from the past few weeks continues: big-ticket furniture and mattresses are under pressure, while decor, accessories, and smaller home essentials hold steady. Consumers aren't done investing in their homes — they're doing it in smaller increments.
Households earning $150,000+ continue to drive the market, planning an average of three furniture purchases this year with total spending around $5,000. The opportunity for retailers: don't treat every customer the same. The high-income segment is spending. The broader market is cautious. Your product mix, messaging, and financing options should reflect both realities.
The retailers keeping registers moving are leading with rugs, lighting, accent pieces, and smaller case goods — creating entry-point relationships for when the bigger purchase is ready.
AI & Search
Two massive developments this week that every furniture retailer needs to understand.
First: Google's March 2026 core update has finished rolling out. Over 55% of sites saw clear impact within two weeks. Original, experience-driven content bounced in rankings. Summary-style and AI-generated content slipped. The update gave significantly more weight to E-E-A-T signals — especially the "Experience" pillar. If your product pages show real usage, real photography, and staff-written advice, you're gaining. If they read like manufacturer spec sheets or AI-generated descriptions, you're losing ground right now.
Second: zero-click search is now the default. 58% of Google searches end without a click. When an AI Overview appears, organic click-through rates drop by 61%. But here's what the SEO communities are focused on: the visitors who do click through from AI results stay 8% longer, view 12% more pages, and are 23% less likely to bounce. They arrive pre-qualified. The job isn't volume anymore — it's being the answer the AI gives.
92% of brands are invisible in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Brands cited inside AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands not cited. The window to own furniture buying guide content in AI search is still wide open.
The Shopify-ChatGPT Moment
This is the story of the week that most retailers haven't processed yet. By late March 2026, every Shopify store will appear inside ChatGPT by default through Shopify's new "Agentic Storefronts." Merchants don't need to opt in — it's automatic. When users search for products in ChatGPT, Shopify's catalog uses specialised LLMs to categorise and surface merchant products.
OpenAI's original "Instant Checkout" inside ChatGPT stumbled — only about 30 merchants were onboarded and it was error-prone. So they pivoted: purchases now complete on the merchant's own storefront through an in-app browser. This is better for retailers. You control the experience.
AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores is up 7x since January 2025. Shopify is also connecting merchants to Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot — not just ChatGPT.
The implication for DOVR retailers: your product data needs to be clean, structured, and detailed right now. Product titles, descriptions, dimensions, materials, variants — the AI is reading all of it to decide whether to recommend you. If your data is messy or incomplete, you're invisible in every AI conversation happening about furniture this month.
Design Signals
Minimalism is officially dead. That's not hyperbole — it's the consensus across every design community this week. What's replacing it is warmer, more personal, and more layered than anything the last decade produced.
Three signals building fast: daybeds and chaise lounges are replacing traditional sofas in living rooms. Consumers want more informal, laid-back spaces — the rigid three-cushion sofa is losing ground to pieces that invite lounging. Irregular wood forms are everywhere — organic arcs, steam-bent frames, CNC-routed curves that follow the body's contours rather than straight lines. And natural materials — rattan, wicker, seagrass — are being paired with deep colour accents in burgundy, teal, and chartreuse for a coastal-meets-collected look.
The colour story continues to shift away from cool neutrals. Creamy tones and deeper caramels are covering walls and upholstery. Nature-inspired shades — sage green, eucalyptus, warm earth tones — are creating interiors that feel calm and grounded. The bold end of the spectrum is showing up too: electric blue cabinets, hot pink dining rooms.
The thread connecting all of it: consumers want spaces that look lived-in, considered, accumulated over time. Vintage furniture wherever possible. The curated mix of old and new. This is an opportunity for independent retailers who can tell that story — not a threat.
Community & Content
Social commerce is now a $100 billion market in the US. TikTok Shop is projected to hit $23.4 billion in US sales this year — a 48% increase — which would make it larger than Target, Costco, Best Buy, or Kroger's ecommerce business. Half of US social shoppers are expected to make a purchase on TikTok in 2026.
The furniture category hasn't fully arrived on TikTok Shop yet, but the signals are clear. The platform's best-selling items combine low price points, spur-of-the-moment appeal, and strong creator amplification. For furniture retailers, that means decor, accent pieces, lighting, and textiles are the entry point — not sofas. The retailers who start building audiences now on short-form video will have a compounding advantage by the time the category matures.
Reddit remains central to furniture purchase decisions. Authentic participation — answering real questions, sharing genuine expertise — surfaces in Google searches and AI results for weeks. The 9:1 rule still applies: nine helpful contributions for every one that mentions your brand.
54% of consumers say sustainability matters when buying furniture. The retailers leading with provenance stories — where materials come from, how pieces are made, what the supply chain looks like — are building deeper customer bonds than those selling on price alone.
Three Signals Worth Watching This Week
🔶 Building Fast — Act within 30 days · Agentic Storefronts Go Default Every Shopify store will appear inside ChatGPT by late March. AI-driven traffic to Shopify is up 7x. Shopify is also connecting to Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Copilot. Your product data — titles, descriptions, dimensions, materials — is now being read by AI to decide whether to recommend you. Clean, structured, detailed data gets surfaced. Messy data gets ignored. This isn't a future problem. It's happening this month.
🔶 Early Signal — 90-day horizon · TikTok Shop Hits $23B TikTok Shop will be larger than Target's ecommerce business this year. Half of US social shoppers will buy on TikTok. Furniture hasn't fully arrived yet, but decor, lighting, and accents are the entry point. The retailers building short-form video audiences now will have a significant head start when the category catches up.
🔶 Steady Build — Ongoing · Zero-Click Search as Default 58% of Google searches end without a click. AI Overviews drop organic CTR by 61%.
